Exciting Times for The Perry Hall Mansion

Dear Historic Perry Hall Mansion Member:

We appreciate your continued support of the Perry Hall Mansion and would like to take this opportunity to invite you to a General Membership and Public open-forum-style meeting on Monday, October 6th from 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm at the Perry Hall Library meeting room. We hope you can join us as we update you on the current situation of the property and the proposed lease agreement with Baltimore County. We have reached a critical point in the process and come to you with both information and a request for your renewed involvement and immediate action, as the future of the Historic Perry Hall Mansion and our organization are in jeopardy.

Since 2007, we have actively attempted to make improvements to the Perry Hall Mansion, working with the County to do so under the proper authority. Within the past year, we were finally offered a lease agreement between our organization and Baltimore County. The HPHM board of directors has carefully reviewed the agreement and voiced many of the liability and property condition concerns in order to proceed. The contract carries many stipulations including the assumption of full property liability in an “as-is” condition. In preparation to sign the lease, we had a full home inspection done on the property to formally assess the current conditions. The inspection identified a number of issues, known and unknown, including a recommendation for further investigation of the septic system. At our May board meeting we met with a specialist from the Baltimore County Department of Environmental Protection and Sustainability to specifically address our septic system. Critical information was brought to our attention from a 2000 site summary, which was omitted from the feasibility studies which we were previously aware of. This information alters our ability to proceed with our intended use and improvements, especially as the long term sustainability of the property is our primary goal.

At the general meeting, the board will present and discuss our current status, safety conditions, the functional use and improvement needs to open the building and property for community use and address the funds needed to make these improvements. In order to move forward, we have set a Capital Campaign goal of raising at least $300,000.00 by June 30, 2015 to ensure this endeavor is feasible and supported by the community or reluctantly determine that it is not. We currently have just under $100,000.00 in our organization accounts. The Perry Hall Mansion needs your support more than ever if we are to move forward. We believe that this building is an asset to our community and want nothing more than to open it for community use and to preserve it for future generations.

Please mark your calendar and plan to attend this meeting on October 6th. Please refer any questions you may have to webmaster@historicperryhallmansion.org. We thank you again for your support and interest in the Perry Hall Mansion.
Respectfully,

The Historic Perry Hall Mansion Board of Directors

The area known as Perry Hall in Baltimore County gets its name from a nearly 250 year old mansion called the Perry Hall Mansion. From its early years in the late 18th century until now, it’s changed hands many times, it’s been damaged by fire and added-onto, and it’s played a role in some very important historical developments in our state.

Tom Hall joins Sean Kief and Jeffrey Smith at the Perry Hall Mansion. They’ve written a book about this historic property for a series called Images of America.

20 August 2012

Exciting things are happening with the Perry Hall Mansion.  After a meeting with Baltimore County officials, in the spring, we have discussed taking on the property from the county through a lease.  In order to do so we must become a separate non-profit entity, currently the Friends of the Perry Hall Mansion has its 501 (c) (3) status through the Perry Hall Rec. & Parks.  We have begun the process of becoming our own distinct entity yet will operate as both the Friends of the Perry Hall Mansion and our newly founded nonprofit corporation the Historic Perry Hall Mansion, Inc. as we are preparing for the organizational changes.

The purpose of this newly formed organization is to maintain, manage, and promote the Perry Hall Mansion, a historic property in Perry Hall, Maryland.  The property shall be used as an educational resource reflecting the area’s history and culture, showcasing the contributions of the house and its residents to Maryland and United States history.  It shall serve as a repository for artifacts relating to local history.  It shall be available for public use including tours and events and other limited uses.

We will have a general membership meeting to introduce the upcoming organizational changes and the future plans for the Perry Hall Mansion on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at 7pm at the Perry Hall Library in the large meeting room.

Perry Hall Mansion History Book Prepped for National Publisher

history book on the Perry Hall Mansion. Credit Emily Kimball

Perry Hall's most significant historic landmark is also its most elusive—hidden behind trees and locked behind a chain-link fence. An upcoming book, however, seeks to offer an unprecedented glimpse into the Perry Hall Mansion's storied past.

Co-authors Sean Kief and Jeffrey Smith are working to complete preparations for an Images of America book through Arcadia Publishing. Images of paintings, artifacts and photos—along with a corresponding narrative of captions—are due to the publisher by Sept. 11. The finished paperback book could hit Amazon, local bookstores and the mansion's gift shop by March 2013.

Perry Hall Mansion Friends Plant Tree, Clean Up

Members of the Perry Hall community gathered to commemorate both Earth Day and Arbor Day at the historic Perry Hall Mansion. The highlight of the event was the planting of a redbud tree, donated by State Sen. Kathy Klausmeier. Baltimore County Councilman David Marks and State Del. John Cluster were also on hand for this spring celebration and volunteer activity.

!!! CANCELLED !!! Earth Day 2012

*** Given that the current weather forecast for the scheduled day of this event presently indicates rain for much of the day on Sunday, the Friends have arranged for an alternate rain-date.  The event will be re-scheduled for Sunday, April the 29th, starting at 1pm at the Perry Hall Mansion. ****

Earth Day 2012

In honor of Earth Day 2012, on Sunday, April 22, the Friends of Perry Hall Mansion will host a special community service opportunity for all interested volunteers.

Starting at 1 p.m. and continuing until 6 p.m., Friends members will work side by side with volunteers to conduct a comprehensive spring cleaning of the 4-acre grounds surrounding the historic Perry Hall Mansion at 3930 Perry Hall Rd. They plan to collect brush and debris, prune and trim shrubs and trees and cut the grass.

A highlight of the event will be a special tree planting ceremony, in commemoration of both Earth Day and Arbor Day, which will fall on April 27. Lunch and light refreshments will be available for all attendees, in addition to raffle prizes and other activities.

Interested volunteers are encouraged to RSVP to Jeff Smith, president of the Friends, at jeffwsmith@verizon.net. Volunteers may bring their own gloves and/or gardening tools.

07 April 2012

This past year we were able to again hold our annual holiday event in the Perry Hall Mansion. After permission from Baltimore County was granted, permits attained and a few visits and compliance with the fire marshal, we were pleased to open the house and show it off. While we are not able to open the house for community public or private use we are hopeful that by the end of this year we will be able to gain the rights to use and operate in the building and its grounds. After permissions are granted we will begin the transformation of the interior main rooms to allow for proper and safe use of the building. We continue to be optimistic that we will be able to use this local landmark to enhance our community and we continue to move forward with promoting the Mansion and our local history. Look for the mansion store items and a number of new items featured at local craft fairs throughout the year including this spring at The Perry Hall Community Hall Craft Show off of Gerst Road March / April 2012 & Among Friends Craft Show at Odd Fellows Hall on Bradshaw Rd near Kingsville March 23-25. As always, we thank you for your continued support, we encourage you to get involved, help with events, attend meetings, join a committee, make a donation, and look forward to new opportunities in the upcoming year.

The Friends of the Perry Hall Mansion Third Annual Holiday Reception

View more images here

During the first Sunday in December, about twenty volunteers from the Friends of Perry Hall Mansion coordinated the first ever holiday tour and reception featuring this historic residence.  Perry Hall Mansion, originally constructed in 1775, was acquired by Baltimore County in 2001, and is supervised by the Department of Recreation and Parks.  The Friends of Perry Hall Mansion, with over 175 members, work collaboratively with the County to guide the restoration and adaptive re-use of this unique property.

The tour was jointly sponsored by the Friends of Jerusalem Mills, and attracted over 135 guests.  Immediately following the tour, the Friends of Perry Hall Mansion welcomed another 150 guests to a holiday reception, featuring musical performances, period furnishings and holiday décor, as well as a visit from Santa Claus.  Special guests included Sen. Kathy Klausmeier and Del. Joe Boteler, who both represent Baltimore County’s 8th legislative district, as well as Mr. Steve Verch, the chair of the County Parks Board.  This day of activity was the first time that visitors could see the completed first phase of interior renovations of Perry Hall Mansion.  This work consisted of the replacement of the plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems, as well as a general stabilization of the interior of the building.  It is hoped that cosmetic renovations and interior decorating can commence sometime during 2010.
